SMT divergence: when correlated markets disagree at the extreme

SMT divergence, short for Smart Money Technique, is ICT's cross-market confirmation tool. It compares two correlated instruments and looks for disagreement at a key level: one makes a new high or low while the other fails to. That failure is a tell that the move is a raid rather than a real breakout, because genuine strength would show in both. For gold the natural partners are the dollar index, which moves inversely, and silver, which moves with it. This module shows how to read the divergence and use it to confirm a sweep.

01

What SMT is

SMT divergence compares two markets that normally move together, or exactly opposite, and flags the moment they disagree. The logic is simple: if a move were genuine, correlated markets would confirm it. When one makes a higher high and its partner makes a lower high, the higher high is suspect, usually a liquidity raid rather than real strength. SMT does not generate a trade by itself; it confirms that a sweep at a level is likely to reverse, adding confidence to the structure read.

Correlation basics for gold

Two relationships matter most for XAUUSD. Gold and the dollar index (DXY) are usually inversely correlated: when the dollar falls, gold tends to rise. Gold and silver are usually positively correlated: they tend to make highs and lows together. So the SMT questions for gold are: when gold pokes a high, does DXY make the matching low, and does silver make the matching high. If a partner refuses, divergence is present. Correlations drift, so always check they are holding that day before leaning on them.

Gold and DXY normally mirror each othergold rising......DXY should be falling (inverse)
Gold up normally means the dollar index down; watch when it does not.
03

Bullish SMT

A bullish SMT appears at a low. Gold makes a lower low, sweeping sell-side liquidity, but silver fails to make a lower low, or DXY fails to make a higher high. Gold took the stops, but its partner would not confirm the weakness, which says the low was a raid, not the start of a leg down. Combine that with a structure shift up and you have a high-confidence long. The divergence is the extra confirmation that the sweep you are buying is real.

Gold raids the low alone; the partner refusing confirms the long.
04

Bearish SMT

A bearish SMT appears at a high. Gold makes a higher high, sweeping buy-side liquidity, but silver fails to make a higher high, or DXY fails to make a lower low. The higher high in gold was a raid; the lack of confirmation warns that the up move is exhausted. Paired with a structure shift down, it is a high-confidence short. On gold this often shows at session highs, where a final push tags the stops but the correlated market quietly refuses to follow.

Bearish SMT: gold makes a higher high, partner does notgold higher high (swept)gold HHshift downsilver did NOT make a higher high = bearish SMT
Gold raids the high alone; the partner refusing confirms the short.
05

Using SMT at key levels

SMT is most powerful at the levels that matter: the previous day high or low, the Asian range extremes, and obvious equal highs and lows. Checking for divergence exactly when gold sweeps one of those pools turns a guess into a graded read. If gold takes the previous day high and DXY fails to take the matching low, the raid is likely to fail and you look for shorts. Random mid-range divergence is noise; divergence at a liquidity level is signal.

06

Confirming a sweep on gold

Fit SMT into the sequence you already know. Price approaches a liquidity pool in a killzone; it sweeps; you check the correlated market for divergence; if the partner refuses to confirm, you wait for the displacement shift and enter on the return into the gap or order block. SMT is a filter that raises confidence, not a standalone trigger. Keep a dollar index and a silver chart beside gold so the check takes seconds, and never force a divergence that is not clearly there.

Q

FAQ

What is SMT divergence?

It is Smart Money Technique divergence: comparing two correlated markets and flagging when they disagree at a key level. If one makes a new high or low and its partner refuses, the move is likely a liquidity raid rather than a genuine breakout.

Which markets do I compare with gold?

The dollar index (DXY), which is usually inversely correlated, and silver, which is usually positively correlated. Ask whether DXY made the mirror move and whether silver made the matching move when gold sweeps a level.

What is a bullish SMT on gold?

Gold makes a lower low and sweeps sell-side liquidity, but silver fails to make a lower low or DXY fails to make a higher high. The partner refusing to confirm the weakness says the low was a raid, supporting a long once structure shifts up.

Does SMT work as a standalone entry signal?

No. SMT is a confirmation filter, not a trigger. It raises confidence that a sweep will reverse, but you still wait for the structure shift and displacement, and enter on the return into a gap or order block.

Do the correlations always hold?

No, they drift and can decouple, especially around major news. Always confirm the gold to DXY and gold to silver relationships are holding that session before relying on a divergence, and treat divergence at a clear liquidity level as far more meaningful than mid-range noise.
