WYCKOFF · Module 04

The market cycle: accumulation, markup, distribution, markdown

The Wyckoff market cycle is the map the whole course hangs on. Price is seen as repeating four phases in order: accumulation, where operators build positions in a range; markup, the uptrend that follows; distribution, where they unload in a range at the top; and markdown, the downtrend that follows. Knowing which phase you are in is the single most useful thing in the method, because it decides whether you should be looking to buy, to hold, to sell or to stand aside. This module draws the full loop and shows how to place gold within it.

01

The four phases

The cycle is a loop. Accumulation is a sideways range after a decline where demand quietly overcomes supply. Markup is the uptrend out of it. Distribution is a sideways range after the rise where supply quietly overcomes demand. Markdown is the downtrend out of that, which eventually exhausts and leads back into a new accumulation. The two trending phases are where money is made with the move; the two ranging phases are where the next move is set up. Most traders focus only on the trends and get caught out by the ranges, which is where the method puts its attention.

02

Accumulation

Accumulation follows a downtrend and ends it. Sellers are exhausted, and a large operator begins absorbing the remaining supply inside a range bounded by support and resistance. The telltale signs are a dramatic stopping of the decline, a bounce, repeated tests of the low that hold on falling volume, and often a spring that grabs the last sellers. Accumulation is where you prepare long trades but do not yet take them; the trade comes as the phase ends and markup begins. The accumulation stage of this course, Modules 6 to 8, is devoted entirely to reading it.

03

Markup

Markup is the uptrend that the accumulation set up. Demand is now in clear control, and price makes higher highs and higher lows, with pullbacks that hold above prior support. This is the phase to be long and to hold, riding the move the composite man engineered. Markup also contains smaller reaccumulation ranges, brief pauses that refresh the trend before it continues, which Module 13 covers. The mistake to avoid is fighting markup: a healthy uptrend on good demand is not a shorting opportunity just because price has risen a long way.

A clean uptrend of higher highs and higher lows: hold, do not fight it.
04

Distribution

Distribution follows the markup and ends it. Buyers are excited and the public is fully involved, which is exactly the demand a large operator needs to sell into. Price ranges at the top, churning on high volume, making failed new highs and upthrusts that fail to hold. It is the mirror of accumulation. Distribution is where you prepare short trades or protect long profits, but you wait for the phase to resolve before committing. The distribution stage, Modules 9 to 12, reads it in full. The hardest skill is telling distribution from a mere pause in markup, which is why context matters so much.

05

Markdown

Markdown is the downtrend out of distribution. Supply dominates, price makes lower highs and lower lows, and the public that bought the top is trapped and eventually sells, providing the cheap supply for the next accumulation. This is the phase to be short or flat, not to buy dips hoping for the bottom. A markdown ends only when stopping action and the accumulation events appear, not when price simply looks cheap. Catching a falling market early is one of the most expensive habits the cycle warns against.

Knowing where you are, on gold

The practical skill is locating gold in the cycle before you trade. Zoom out to the daily and H4: is price in a range after a fall (possible accumulation), trending up (markup), ranging after a rise (possible distribution) or trending down (markdown). That single judgement sets your whole stance for the session. On gold the phases can run for weeks on the higher timeframes while a complete miniature cycle plays out intraday, so always know which timeframe's phase you are trading. Get the phase right and the specific events you learn later simply tell you when to act.

Q

FAQ

What are the four phases of the Wyckoff cycle?

Accumulation, a range after a decline where operators build longs; markup, the uptrend that follows; distribution, a range after the rise where operators unload; and markdown, the downtrend that follows. The loop then repeats as a new accumulation forms.

Why does knowing the phase matter so much?

Because it sets your entire stance. In accumulation you prepare longs, in markup you hold them, in distribution you protect profits or prepare shorts, and in markdown you stay short or flat. Trading against the phase, such as shorting a healthy markup, is the most common and costly error.

How do I tell accumulation from distribution early?

Early on you often cannot with certainty, which is why context is key: accumulation follows a decline, distribution follows an advance. You then watch the events, a spring points to accumulation, an upthrust that fails to distribution, and let the range show its hand before committing.

Is the cycle the same on every timeframe?

The structure is fractal, so yes, but the phases on different timeframes can disagree. A daily markup can contain an intraday distribution within a pullback. Always know which timeframe's cycle you are trading and let the higher timeframe set the dominant bias.

When does a markdown end?

When stopping action and the accumulation events appear, not simply when price looks cheap. A preliminary support, a selling climax, an automatic rally and a secondary test mark the turn. Buying a markdown before those show is how traders repeatedly catch a falling market too early.
