H1 as the intraday spine
On H1, each session paints two to nine candles — enough that structure (the swing sequence, the current dealing range, the active zones) updates meaningfully through the day without whipsawing every twenty minutes. The operating rule: H1 structure is your intraday bias. Above the H1 protected low with higher highs printing, you are a buyer of dips at zones; flip on a confirmed H1 shift. The M15/M5 charts refine entries but never overrule the spine — that hierarchy alone deletes most intraday overtrading.
Setup one: the H1 zone continuation
The bread-and-butter: H1 trend intact, price retraces to a marked H1 object — a demand zone, an order block, a flipped level — inside the leg's discount. Trigger on M15: a sweep of a minor low that reclaims, or a mini structure shift back with trend. Stop beyond the zone plus M15 ATR; target the H1 leg high and the liquidity beyond it. This is the continuation model running at intraday scale, and in trending weeks it fires nearly daily.
Setup two: the session-extreme reversal
The counter-setup for range days: price runs a SESSION liquidity pool — Asia's high, yesterday's low — into an H1 zone and fails (wick through, close back). That sweep-at-H1-structure is the highest-quality intraday reversal signal available (sweep mechanics): enter on the M15 reclaim, stop beyond the sweep wick, target the opposite session extreme. Session timing is half this setup — sweeps at the London open and the NY handoff are the scheduled ones (London / New York).
Risk and rhythm
H1 risk framework: 0.5-1% per trade, stops sized off M15/H1 ATR so session volatility cannot clip a correct idea, one to three trades per day MAXIMUM — the two setups simply do not occur more often with quality. No entries into red-calendar windows (calendar). FAQ
Is H1 good for intraday gold trading?
It is arguably THE intraday timeframe for gold: enough setups to trade every session, enough stability that structure means something. Most consistent intraday traders run H1 bias with M15 execution.
How many trades per day does an H1 strategy give?
One to three quality signals on most days — the zone continuation in trends, the session-extreme reversal in ranges. More than that usually means standards are dropping, not opportunity rising.
Where do stops go on H1 trades?
Beyond the H1 zone or sweep wick that justifies the trade, plus an M15-ATR buffer for session noise. If that distance makes the target less than 2R away, the entry is late — wait for the deeper retrace.
