Trading gold through the London session

Gold is a London market at heart — the city has priced bullion for three centuries, and its morning still sets the tone for the whole trading day. When London desks arrive, the polite overnight drift ends: volume triples, the Asian range gets tested from both sides, and the day's first real trend is born. Knowing HOW London typically does this is worth more than any indicator.

01

The open: expect a raid before a trend

London's signature move is the Judas swing: within the first hour or two, price runs one side of the Asian range — collecting the stops parked at its high or low — then reverses and spends the morning trending the OTHER way. It happens because the overnight range is a neatly stacked liquidity shelf, and the first serious money of the day likes to fill size against it.

The discipline this buys you: never treat the first London push as the day's direction. Let it raid, watch for the reclaim, and the REAL leg usually starts from the failure — the sweep-and-reclaim entry from the sweep guide, on schedule almost daily.

02

The morning trend leg

Once the raid resolves, London tends to produce the cleanest trending hours of the day (roughly 08:00-11:30 UK time): institutional flows, macro repricing from European data, and enough volume that levels are respected rather than wandered through. Pullback entries with the morning's flow — at S/R, at fresh order blocks — perform noticeably better in this window than the same setups taken in Asian hours.

Note the fix window mid-morning and the London lunch lull: the trend leg often pauses or retraces when desks step away.

03

A simple London playbook

(1) Before the open, mark the Asian high/low and yesterday's high/low. (2) Expect one of them to be raided in the first 1-2 hours; do not pre-position. (3) Trade the reclaim if the raid fails (stop beyond the sweep wick), or the first pullback if the break holds with acceptance. (4) Take meaningful profit before the New York handoff — the afternoon can reverse London entirely (see the overlap guide). (5) Check the calendar first: a UK-morning USD release changes everything.

See it on the chart

The XAUUSD live chart draws the session boxes (DST-aware, defined in each exchange's local time), the Asian range extremes and the previous-day levels automatically, plus the London killzone window if you want the ICT framing — that variant is covered in the London killzone guide. Watch five London opens with the session tools on and the rhythm becomes unmistakable. Nothing here is financial advice.

Q

FAQ

What time does the London session open for gold?

Around 08:00 London local time (the metal never truly closes overnight — what opens is the volume). The high-energy window runs roughly 08:00-11:30 UK, with the biggest single burst in the first two hours.

What is the Judas swing in London?

The habitual early fake: London runs one side of the Asian range to collect stops, then reverses into the day's real trend. Treating the first push as the day's direction is the classic London mistake.

Is London better than New York for trading gold?

London usually offers the cleaner TREND behaviour; New York offers the bigger EVENTS (US data, COMEX depth). Many gold traders do their best work in London morning plus the first overlap hours. It is preference, not doctrine.
