CVD, honestly explained

Cumulative volume delta answers a precise question: of all volume traded, how much was initiated by buyers crossing the spread versus sellers? Sum the difference candle by candle and the CVD line tracks which side has been paying for immediacy. It is a genuinely powerful read, with one non-negotiable requirement, classified trade data, and one permanent caveat: price, not delta, is the scoreboard.

01

What delta actually is

Each trade prints at the bid or the ask: hit the bid and a seller initiated, lift the ask and a buyer did. Delta nets these per candle; CVD accumulates the nets. The line therefore records aggression, who demanded fills now, which is different from opinion and different from the price outcome, and that difference is where the tool earns its keep.

02

The reads that work

Two are robust. Alignment: trend advancing with CVD confirming means aggression and result agree, healthy continuation. Divergence: price grinding to new highs while CVD flattens or falls means the advance is happening without fresh buyer aggression, absorption of shorts or passive-bid engineering, either way a fragility flag worth pairing with structure, in the same family as the effort-result reads.

03

The honesty requirements

CVD requires real classified tape; spot gold has none, so any spot XAUUSD CVD is an estimate wearing a costume. Our chart draws CVD only from a genuinely classified twenty-four-hour proxy tape and labels it as exactly that. Second, delta divergences can persist absurdly long: passive absorption can eat aggression for days while price grinds on. CVD raises questions; price structure answers them, always in that order.

Q

FAQ

Can CVD be calculated for spot XAUUSD?

Not honestly: spot has no central classified tape. Real CVD needs futures or proxy-market data, clearly labelled.

Is negative CVD in an uptrend bearish?

It flags that the rise ran on absorbed selling rather than buyer aggression: a fragility question for structure to answer, not an automatic short.

Does delta lead price?

Sometimes, at extremes, when combined with location. As a standalone timing tool it disappoints; as corroboration it is excellent.
