Top-down analysis, step by step

By the XAUUSDLiveChart Research Desk · 6 min read

Top-down analysis is a chain of jurisdiction: each timeframe rules on questions the ones below may not overturn. The weekly and daily decide which side of the market deserves your business. H4 locates the structure to trade around. H1 and below only choose the moment. Most bad trades are jurisdiction violations: a beautiful M5 trigger arguing against a daily downtrend it never consulted.

Weekly and daily: the verdict level

Two questions only: which direction is structure pointing, and where are the major zones price is travelling between? Higher highs and lows or the reverse; the key weekly levels above and below. Write the answer down. It changes rarely and vetoes everything.

H4: the working structure

Inside the higher-frame verdict, H4 shows the tradeable skeleton: the active leg, the zones worth waiting at, the liquidity above and below. Here you form the plan: where you would buy or sell if given the chance, aligned with the level above.

H1 and below: timing only

The execution frame answers exactly one question: has price arrived at the planned area and produced the trigger behaviour, a sweep, a shift, a rejection with participation? It may never overrule the plan; it may only accept or decline the appointment.

The veto rules

Concrete guardrails: no counter-daily trades without an explicit reversal case at a major level; no entries into an imminent higher-frame zone, since sitting under weekly resistance is not where longs get initiated; and when frames disagree, the higher one wins by default. The full worked version is in the multi-timeframe notes.

A fifteen-minute routine

Weekly glance, daily structure, H4 plan, alerts at the chosen zones, walk away. The routine's output is a short list of if-then appointments, not a compulsion to trade today.

FAQ

How many timeframes should the chain include?

Three working levels cover it: context, structure, timing. More levels add ceremony faster than insight.

What if H4 and Daily disagree?

Default to the higher frame. Trade the disagreement only when a completed reversal structure at a significant level argues the daily is turning.

Do I repeat this every day?

The weekly-daily verdict needs minutes to refresh. The H4 plan updates as structure evolves. The discipline is doing it before entries, not after.
