Line vs candles vs Renko
By the XAUUSDLiveChart Research Desk · 4 min read
The market produces one stream of trades; chart types are different compressions of it. Candles keep the most information per window. Lines keep only the closes. Renko deletes time entirely and keeps only movement. None is superior; each answers a particular question fastest, and our chart lets you switch among all three for exactly that reason.
Candles: the full window
Open, high, low, close per bucket: candles preserve intrabar conflict, wicks and close quality. Every serious execution decision benefits from that detail, which is why candles are the default. Their cost is visual noise: wick forests can hide the simple path of the market.
Line: the settled path
A line through closes deletes everything except where each period settled. That deletion is its gift: swing structure, higher highs and lower lows, becomes unmissable. When wicks have you doubting whether structure actually shifted, the line chart answers in one glance. It is a reading view, not an execution view.
Renko: movement only
Renko prints a brick each time price travels a fixed distance, ignoring the clock. Sideways hours compress into nothing; trends become unbroken brick runs. Built from closed data it does not repaint, and it excels at making chop visible as chop. Its cost: no time axis, no wicks and a lag of one brick by construction, so it frames context rather than timing entries.
A sane workflow
Read structure on line or Renko when candles get noisy; execute on candles where the detail lives. Switching views to re-ask a question is free; trading from the view that hides your risk is not.
FAQ
Does Renko repaint?
Renko built from closed candles, as on our chart, does not repaint: bricks form only from completed data. Live-tick Renko variants elsewhere can redraw the forming brick.
What brick size should Renko use?
Something proportional to volatility, commonly around an ATR-based size. Fixed dollar bricks need revisiting when the volatility regime shifts.
Why do my indicators disappear on Renko?
Renko's synthetic time axis breaks tools anchored to clock time. Structure overlays belong on candle views.
