The Flow menu, explained
By the XAUUSDLiveChart Research Desk · 5 min read
The Flow menu gathers everything about participation: how much activity is behind price, and, where the data genuinely supports it, which side is pressing. Because flow data varies wildly in quality, every tool here carries an honest label: tick-based views describe activity, tape-based views describe classified trades on a proxy market, and estimates say estimate. Knowing which is which is the entire skill.
Activity views
The basic volume toggle shows per-candle tick activity; the Master Volume panel upgrades it into percentile terms, activity versus the last hundred candles, plus effort-versus-result reading: big effort with no travel flags possible absorption, big effort with clean travel flags initiative. All of it is participation measurement, and it says so, per the tick volume guide.
Tape views
The Order Flow and Footprint tools use genuinely classified trade data, every trade tagged buyer- or seller-initiated, from a related twenty-four-hour proxy market, and are labelled as exactly that. They offer real cumulative delta, absorption ticks and per-level clusters: the honest version of tools usually sold with fake precision on spot data that cannot support them.
Estimates, labelled
The pressure-gauge tools derive buy-sell lean from candle anatomy: useful, fast, available on every timeframe, and permanently labelled as estimates rather than order flow. When gauge and tape agree, confidence rises; when they disagree, the tape outranks the estimate.
Using flow sanely
Flow answers one question well: is this move attended? Breakouts, rejections and level tests all read differently with participation behind them. Flow does not answer where or when by itself, which is why every flow tool here feeds context into structure rather than issuing its own signals.
FAQ
Why do flow tools mention a proxy market?
Spot gold has no central tape, so classified trade data comes from a related round-the-clock market and is labelled as such rather than passed off as spot volume.
Which flow tool is most reliable?
The tape-based views, because their data is genuinely classified. Tick and anatomy tools measure activity and estimates respectively, and say so.
Can flow tools generate buy or sell signals?
No, by design. They grade participation behind price events; direction decisions stay with structure and levels.
