Displacement: the candle that proves someone meant it

Displacement is the quiet backbone of everything so far. It is the wide, forceful move that separates a real break of structure from a liquidity sweep, that creates the fair value gaps you trade, and that marks the order blocks worth trusting. If a single idea decides whether a setup is worth taking, it is this one: did price leave with conviction, or did it just poke a level and drift back?

01

What displacement is

Displacement is a sharp, one-sided move, usually one or more wide-bodied candles with small wicks, that travels a long way in a short time. It is the chart's way of showing that one side overwhelmed the other. Where ordinary candles show a fair fight, a displacement candle shows a rout, and routs leave evidence: broken structure, imbalances and order blocks. Learn to see it at a glance.

02

Real breaks versus weak breaks

This is displacement's most important job. A real break of structure closes a candle body beyond the level with displacement; a weak break only pushes a wick through and closes back. The first is a continuation signal you can trust; the second is usually a sweep that reverses. When price breaks a level, the only question that matters is whether the body closed through it with force, or whether it just wicked and failed.

03

Displacement creates gaps

Because displacement moves so fast, it skips prices and leaves a fair value gap behind it, exactly the imbalance from Module 5. This is why the two ideas are inseparable: the gaps worth trading are the ones left by genuine displacement, not by slow drift. When you see a clean gap, look at the candle that made it; if it was a displacement candle, the gap is worth watching.

04

Displacement marks the order block

The same logic validates order blocks. A block is only worth trading if the move away from it was a displacement, because that force is the proof that real orders were there. A candle followed by a slow, overlapping move is not an order block, no matter how it looks. Use displacement as the single test: did this zone launch a forceful move, or not?

05

Displacement confirms a sweep

On its own a sweep is only a hint. A sweep followed by displacement in the opposite direction is a signal. Price takes the liquidity, then a wide body drives the other way, confirming the intent behind the sweep. This pairing, sweep then displacement, is the highest-odds trigger in the method, and it is what separates a real reversal from price merely poking a level and stalling.

06

Grading displacement

Not every wide candle is equal. Grade displacement by the body-to-range ratio: a candle that is nearly all body with tiny wicks is strong; one with a large wick is weaker and closer to a sweep. The cleaner and more one-sided the candle, the more you can trust the break, the gap and the block it produced. A little judgement here filters out a lot of marginal setups.

07

Entering with displacement

Displacement does not just confirm; it gives the entry. After a displacement move, wait for the retrace into the gap it left, enter there, place the stop beyond the origin of the move, and target the next liquidity. Because displacement implies momentum, these entries often run quickly in your favour, which is part of why body-close breaks are worth waiting for over wicky ones.

Train your eye live

Open the live XAUUSD chart and scroll through recent moves, labelling each break as real or weak by whether the body closed through with displacement. Do it for a few dozen examples and the distinction becomes instant, which is exactly what you need in real time. The next module puts displacement to work at specific times of day, when it matters most: the sessions and kill zones.

Q

FAQ

What is displacement in SMC?

A sharp, one-sided move, usually one or more wide-bodied candles with small wicks, that travels far in a short time. It shows one side overwhelmed the other and is what creates real breaks of structure, fair value gaps and tradeable order blocks.

How does displacement tell a real break from a fake one?

A real break closes a candle body beyond the level with displacement; a weak break only pushes a wick through and closes back. The body close with force is a continuation signal, while the wick that fails is usually a sweep that reverses.

Why does displacement create fair value gaps?

Because it moves so fast that it skips prices, leaving a one-sided space, the imbalance, behind it. That is why the gaps worth trading are the ones left by genuine displacement rather than by slow, overlapping drift.

How do I grade the strength of displacement?

By the body-to-range ratio. A candle that is almost all body with tiny wicks is strong displacement; one with a large wick is weaker and closer to a sweep. The cleaner and more one-sided the candle, the more you can trust what it produced.

What is the highest-odds trigger in SMC?

A liquidity sweep followed immediately by displacement in the opposite direction. Price takes the stops, then a wide body drives the other way, confirming the intent behind the sweep. That pairing separates a real reversal from a level that is merely poked.
