What VWAP is and why desks care
VWAP = the session's total traded value divided by total volume — the true average entry of everyone who transacted today. Institutional buyers judge their fills against it ("did we beat VWAP?"), which creates real behaviour: buy programs slow above it and press near it, sellers mirror that, and price develops a gravitational relationship with the line. Above VWAP, the average participant today is in profit on longs — a genuine sentiment fact, not an interpretation.
The two honest uses
(1) Intraday bias line: price holding above a rising VWAP = buyers own the session; pullbacks TO VWAP in that state are the intraday equivalent of a trend retrace, tradeable with a standard M15 trigger. Price criss-crossing a flat VWAP = balanced session, range rules. (2) Stretch measure: distance from VWAP is today's version of "how far from fair" — extensions of 2-3x the session's typical deviation into a marked level, late in a session, are where mean-reversion fades earn their keep, especially on newsless afternoons. Bands (1σ/2σ around VWAP) formalise the same read.
Limits and the gold-specific notes
Honesty list: VWAP RESETS each session — it says nothing about swing structure (H4 zones outrank it always); its "volume" on spot gold is feed-dependent (futures volume is the institutional reference; good chart feeds mirror the shape well enough for the line to behave); and on violent news days the anchor lags the regime change — post-CPI, the morning's VWAP is history, not gravity. Use it as the intraday context layer under structure, not above it. The live chart includes VWAP among its overlays and drawing tools, alongside the session boxes it pairs with naturally (session guide). Nothing here is financial advice.
FAQ
What does VWAP tell you on a gold chart?
Today's true volume-weighted average price — the session's fair value and the benchmark institutional executions are judged against. Price's position and behaviour relative to it is a genuine intraday sentiment read.
Is VWAP better than a moving average?
For intraday work, usually — it weights by actual volume and matches what execution desks reference, so its levels reflect real behaviour rather than arithmetic. For swing timeframes it resets too often to matter.
Can I use VWAP for gold swing trading?
Standard session VWAP, no — it restarts daily. Anchored VWAP (from a swing low, a news event) extends the concept usefully to swing charts, functioning like a volume-weighted trendline from the chosen origin.
