Paper gold versus physical
By the XAUUSDLiveChart Research Desk · 5 min read
The word gold covers several distinct products. A spot XAUUSD position is price exposure through a dealing relationship. A futures contract is an exchange obligation. An ETF share is a claim on vaulted, audited metal. A coin in your possession is the metal itself. Price-wise they track together; ownership-wise they are entirely different, and matching vehicle to purpose avoids both the paranoid and the naive mistakes.
The spectrum of claims
From most abstract to most concrete: leveraged spot positions, which are counterparty relationships built for trading; futures, standardized and cleared, deliverable in principle, used for delivery almost never; fund shares backed by allocated vault metal with published bar lists; allocated storage in your own name; and possession. Each step toward concrete trades convenience and cost for directness.
What traders need
For trading, abstraction is the feature: instant execution, leverage, no vault, no insurance, no premiums. Nobody scalps coins. The honest cost of trading vehicles is spread, funding and counterparty dependence, all covered across our spot versus futures notes, and all acceptable for positions measured in days.
What savers need
For decade-horizon wealth storage, the calculus flips: counterparty chains become the cost, and premiums, storage and insurance buy their absence. Physical and allocated forms answer a different question than trading ever asks: not where is the price going, but what do I hold if systems are stressed.
The honest middle
Most claimed conflicts between paper and physical camps dissolve once purpose is stated. The same person can rationally trade spot this week and hold coins for years; the vehicles are answers to different questions, and the market prices them within arbitrage distance of each other.
FAQ
Does paper gold suppress the real price?
Arbitrage keeps paper and physical prices linked; persistent large gaps would be free money for dealers. Premiums on small physical items reflect fabrication and retail costs, not a different gold price.
Can I take delivery from my trading position?
From retail spot positions, no; they are cash-settled dealing products. Delivery paths exist through futures and some allocated programs, with real logistics involved.
Which form is best?
Best for what: trading favours spot and futures; long-horizon holding favours allocated or possessed metal. Purpose first, vehicle second.
